“Every Summer Has a Story” – Clea’s Picks

Clea Simon replacement

Poisoned Pen Press publishes Clea Simon’s Pru Marlowe pet noir series. The series features an animal behaviorist who can hear what animals are thinking, most notably her irascible tabby Wallis.

Simon’s books in order, by original Poisoned Pen Press publication date, are: Dogs Don’t Lie (2011), Cats Can’t Shoot (2012), Parrots Prove Deadly (2013), Panthers Play for Keeps (2014), Kittens Can Kill (2015), and When Bunnies Go Bad (2016).

Clea has three suggestions for summer reading. “The Sympathizer has been coming with me to the beach. Never mind the Pulitzer, the Anthony, etc., Viet Thanh Nguyen’s first-person voice grabbed me right away with its immediacy. Besides, I think it’s important to hear from the other side of what is now our second-longest war.”

Sympathizer

Simon’s second pick is by an author who regularly appears at The Poisoned Pen. “The Murder of Mary Russell by Laurie R. King is next up. I love this series (which features an aging Sherlock Holmes and his very Holmes-ian American partner/spouse) and this latest installment has gotten wonderful reviews.” Interested in a signed copy of this one? We have them in our Web Store. bit.ly/29vDrkL

Murder of Mary Russell

Clea Simon’s final pick is another by an award-winning author. “Catriona McPherson’s The Child Garden is also on my summer TBR (To Be Read). I came to McPherson’s books through her whimsical historical cozy series, the Dandy GIlver books, but then I read her eerie, darker standalone Quiet Neighbors and I was hooked.”

Child Garden

F. Paul Wilson at The Poisoned Pen

Barbara Peters, owner of The Poisoned Pen Bookstore, recently welcomed F. Paul Wilson for a program and book signing. He’s on his book tour right now for Panacea.

Panacea

Here’s the description of the book, as it appears on the store’s website.

“Two secret societies vie for control of the ultimate medical miracle – Panacea – in the latest novel by New York Times bestselling author F. Paul Wilson.

Medical examiner Laura Hanning has two charred corpses and no answers. Both bear a mysterious tattoo but exhibit no known cause of death. Their only connection to one another is a string of puzzling miracle cures. Her preliminary investigation points to a cult in the possession of the fabled panacea – the substance that can cure all ills – but that’s impossible.

Laura finds herself unknowingly enmeshed in an ancient conflict between the secretive keepers of the panacea and the equally secretive and far more deadly group known only as 536, a brotherhood that fervently believes God intended for humanity to suffer, not be cured. Laura doesn’t believe in the panacea, but that doesn’t prevent the agents of 536 from trying to kill her.

A reclusive, terminally ill billionaire hires Laura to research the possibility of the panacea. The billionaire’s own body guard, Rick Hayden, a mercenary who isn’t who he pretends to be, has to keep her alive as they race to find the legendary panacea before the agents of 536 can destroy it.”

Photos – Ramsay & McCafferty

If you missed the program featuring Frederick Ramsay and Keith McCafferty, you missed a fun time at The Poisoned Pen. For instance, McCafferty, who is the Survival and Outdoor Skills Editor of Field & Stream, brought bookstore owner Barbara Peters a gift. McCafferty writes about Sean Stranahan, a painter, fly fisherman, and private investigator, and Sheriff Martha Ettinger, in Montana. To commemorate his fifth book, he brought Peters a fly.

“Every Summer Has a Story” – J.C.’s Picks

Poisoned Pen Press author J.C. Lane responded when I asked for suggestions for summer reading. The author of Tag, You’re Dead, recommended four books.

JC Lane

Robert Crais’ The Promise is actually called “An Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novel”. But, readers certainly have their favorite character. Lane says, “Anything that includes Joe Pike is a good summer read, because, well, he’s awesome.”

Promise

Lane suggests a title that many readers may not recognize, Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer by Katie Alender.”Paris, ghosts, unexplained murders…it has it all.”

Marie Antoinette

Have you met Bernie Rhodenbarr? You will in Lane’s next pick, Burglars Can’t Be Choosers by Lawrence Block. She picked it “Because a re-read of these is wonderful, and if you haven’t yet had the pleasure – you’re in for a treat (and I’m jealous)! Funny and fun.

Burglars

J.C. Lane’s last recommendation is Charles Todd’s A Fine Summer’s Day. She says, ‘A look back before Ian Rutledge went to war – a lovely “flashback” for Rutledge fans.”

Fine Summer's Day

A Fine Summer’s Day, a fine way to end a summer books post. You can order any of the books, including J.C. Lane’s Tag, You’re Dead, through the Web Store. https://store.poisonedpen.com/

“The Perfect Summer Read”

Did you miss Beatriz Williams when she was here to discuss A Certain Age? Annie Philbrick of Bank Street Books calls it “The PERFECT summer read, literary and smart”.

“Every Summer Has a Story” – Hank’s Picks

Award-winning author and journalist. Editor. Former president of Sisters in Crime. How many hats can Hank Phillippi Ryan wear? Her latest Jane Ryland novel, What You See, was an award nominee. And, her Charlotte McNally mysteries, such as Air Time, are being reprinted in hardcover.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

As busy as she is, Hank took time to suggest a few books for us for summer reading. We have four titles.

Like Terry Shames, Hank recommends Noah Hawley’s Before the Fall. She says, “A master class in structure – and not just a plane crash thriller, but a wonderful examination of television, journalism, celebrity, passion, family, deception and the way we live and think today. I carried this book around with me so that if I ever had any time at all, I could sneak in a few more pages.”

She suggests Clare Mackintosh’s I Let You Go. “Completely surprising. I actually went back, after one astonishing development, to check if the author had played fair with this riveting psychological thriller. Yes, indeed, it all works perfectly. It’s amazingly and brilliantly clever.

I Let You Go

Ryan picks one of our July authors. Linda Fairstein will be at The Poisoned Pen on July 27 with Hank’s suggestion, Killer Look. Hank wrote, “She’s on my absolutely must read list, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Top of the pile when it comes out in late July.”

Killer Look

Her final pick is nonfiction, a look inside the world of a crime fiction author. Reacher Said Nothing is by Andy Martin. “I didn’t know what to expect, and bought it with a kind of apprehensive curiosity, wondering if this idea could possibly work – Martin shadows Lee Child through the writing of Make Me. It turns out to be one of the most instructive and educational (and affectionate) books about writing I’ve read in a long time. (It’s also got a lot of fun insider stuff.)

Reacher Said Nothing

I loved Hank Phillippi Ryan’s comment. “This is such a fun idea – and kind of impossible to choose.” You’ll have to choose, though, unless you decide to pick up all the books. They’re available through our Web Store, along with Hank’s books. https://store.poisonedpen.com/

Brad Taylor, Ghosts of War – Anniversary Edition

Ghosts of War is Brad Taylor’s tenth book in five years. Can you say hard-working author?

Ghosts of War

Or, maybe exhausted is the term.

The Poisoned Pen welcomed him and the audience with cake for his anniversary. We can’t share the cake, but we can share the interview. Barbara Peters, owner of the bookstore, hosted the celebration and the program. We have it here on Livestream for you. https://livestream.com/poisonedpen/events/5468501

And, of course, we have signed copies available through the Web Store if you’d like to buy one. https://bit.ly/29vtfIU Haven’t read Brad Taylor yet? We carry the earlier books in the Pike Logan series as well.

“Every Summer Has a Story” – Terry’s Picks

“Every Summer Has a Story”, however, I’d like to offer you a few of them. I recently asked some mystery and crime fiction authors if they would like to suggest a few titles for your summer reading. If NPR can ask booksellers to make recommendations, I can ask mystery authors. So, occasionally, one of the posts will feature an author with some suggestions. If you find a title enticing, check out our Web Store. https://store.poisonedpen.com/

I’m sure we either have the book in stock, or can get it for you.

First up is Terry Shames, author of the award-winning Samuel Craddock mysteries. Her most recent one is The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake.

Terry Shames

Terry  has three picks for summer reading.

She recommends Rhys Bowen’s Royal Spyness novel, Queen of Hearts, and goes on to say, “Or read any of the books in this series for a delightful, engaging, frothy cozy read…This series won my heart.” (And, fans of this series will want to watch our calendar for Rhys’ scheduled appearance with her new book, Crowned and Dangerous, in August.)

Queen of Hearts

Noah Hawley’s Before the Fall is now on The New York Times Best Seller List. Shames calls it, “The perfect summer read, absorbing and gossipy, with a mystery at the heart of it.”

Before the Fall

Terry Shames’ third selection is Susan Shea’s Mixed Up with Murder. “Third in this delightfully playful and stylish series, has Dani O’Rourke getting in trouble at a small New England college.”

Mixed Up with Murder

Terry says, “Summertime and the Reading is Easy.” I hope the suggestions and The Poisoned Pen Bookstore can make that reading easy for you!
