Lea Love

Baldacci, David. The Innocent Signed - A new character , a lethal hero, comes to us from one of my faves…now a hitman with a heart…

Pat King

Adelstein, Jake.  Tokyo Vice.
Going through a non-fiction kick, I recently reread this book. Adelstein, an American reporter living and writing for the Japanese
Yomiuri Shinbun, explores the crime and corruption of Japan.  From serial murders to Japanese Gangsters (with a proper code of ethics), Adelstein explores this strange and twisted underworld.

Box, C.J. Force of Nature Signed.
Box continues to deliver the goods in this, the twelfth in the Joe Picket series. Picket and his family are drawn into the line of fire
when an operative in Romanowski’s past makes a visit.  I’m continually amazed at C.J. Box’s ability to produce an amazingly tightly plotted novel that never breaks tension.

Collins, Susanna. Hunger Games.
I’ve been on the band wagon for the Hunger Games since it’s debut in 2008.  Collins has created a masterpiece of Science Fiction- not unlike Fahrenheit 451 or 1984- in which the United States has disintegrated into a dystopian society.  For those teenagers lucky enough to win the games- fame comes to the family- and more importantly food for the rest of their lives.  Those who don’t win- pay with their lives.

Winspear, Jacqueline.  Elegy for Eddie Signed

As I’m writing this, I only 20 pages into it (I picked up on the signing night).  However, I’ve been hooked onto Winspear for the past three years after picking up her first, Maisie Dobbs, for a library event.  In this latest novel, Winspear’s mystery focuses on the death of a gentle, but slow, man who is known for calming horses. Maisie, who came from humble beginnings, knows of the death and offers her services to help discover the cause of Eddie’s death.  Winspear hooks you in quickly with her quick wit, well rounded characters and complex mystery.  For those who are interested in World War I and the events leading up to it, Winspear provides plenty of historical references.

Patrick Millikin

Paul Cain.  COMPLETE SLAYERS ($75.00)  Finally, everything this Black Mask writer ever published in one volume, with excellent notes and biographical information.  Original cover illustration by Robert McGinnis.  Signed and limited to 500 copies. Indispensable for the pulp fiction aficionado, this long-awaited volume sold out immediately upon publication.

Bruce Holbert.  LONESOME ANIMALS.  Brilliant debut western-meets-detective novel set in Depression-era Washington state.   The frontier era is only recently ended, but a serial killer is out there killing Indians and ritualistically mutilating them. Crusty former lawman Russell Strawl is called in to investigate. Violent, disturbing and compelling.

Phillip Kerr.  PRAGUE FATAL Signed.

Derek Raymond.  DEAD MAN UPRIGHT.   “Finally, the first US publication of the fifth and final Factory novel.  Many Raymond diehards here in the States didn’t even know this one existed.  If you’ve never read these remarkable books, beg steal or borrow a copy of HE DIED WITH HIS EYES OPEN and read all five books (if you dare).   You will never be the same again

Stark, Richard. The Damsel / The Dame / The Blackbird  - Donald Westlake wrote a long running series about a professional thief named Parker – these 3 books are offshoots with Parker’s heist mate Grofield taking center stage

Woodrell, Daniel. Tomato RedDisturbingly bleak but beautifully written

Will Hanisko

Kerr, Philip. Prague Fatale Signed. A great PI series that also shares often original insights to not only sleuthing but a wide array of historical settings.

Laukkanen, Owen. The Professionals Signed

Sallis, James. Driven Signed. The sequal to Drive. Sallis does a great job of portraying what is  typically a macho character type poetically.

Segal, Stephen. Geek Wisdom: The Sacred Teaching of Nerd Culture. With Phoenix Comicon coming up later this month I felt that I needed to buff up a bit. Brief articles on the classic standards heroes of the SciFi/Fantasy genre such as Asimov, Darth Vader, JRR Tolkien. Interestingly, the most popular subjects seem to be moving away from novels and more towards movies, television shows and content found on the internet.

Toole, F.X. Pound for Pound. After reading Eddie Muller’s THE DISTANCE and Leonard Gardner’s FAT CITY  there’s just something about boxing in a novel that gets me. Maybe it’s that boxers are  almost like the hardboiled private-eye, always out on their own and often getting beaten up.
