We’ve received a small shipment of some signed, slipcased, limited-edition copies of George Pelecanos’ novel WHAT IS WAS. Photos won’t do them justice, but we tried.
As Pelecanos writes in the book’s introduction, What It Was was written in a frenzy of inspiration this past summer. The reader eavesdrops on a conversation between two old friends, Derek Strange and Nick Stefanos, over a few beers on a lazy afternoon. The story that Strange relates goes back to 1972, after he’d left the police force and set up shop as a private investigator. During the course of a routine job recovering a stolen piece of jewelry, Strange stumbles across the path of a killer named Red Fury, who is cutting a bloody swath across D.C. The young PI and his former partner, Frank “Hound Dog” Vaughn team up to run the psychopath down, using whatever means necessary. Based on a real chapter from D.C. history, this lean and mean narrative kicks ass. Don’t miss it.
