It’s 1995. Anna Pigeon is 35 years old, bereft, and going for a reboot. She’s taken a job far from New York City as a seasonal employee at Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. Arriving by bus, she works on her broken heart while learning the job and making solitary explorations of the remote landscape surrounding Lake Powell. One day she goes off hiking…and never returns. Her co-workers, finding her cabin cleaned out and things gone, think the unhappy Anna has moved on. As for Anna, unfit and untrained for survival, she gradually awakes to the realization she’s trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, hungry, thirsty—and totally alone. Anna’s story is powerful, a worthy prequel to this award-wining series. So too is the portrait of the Glen Canyon region, its politics and policies, so timely today.

Library Journal says, “Barr’s luxuriant depictions of desert landscapes with its colors and hues and details about Lake Powell’s tourist population are interwoven into the narrative as an indispensable element of her popular series. Anna emerges from this canyon escapade as a strong, determined woman who plans to return to park service employment as a law enforcement ranger, stating that ‘more women should carry guns.’ Another awesome winner for Barr.”

Nevada will be signing next week (Tues. 1/17 at 7pm) at The Poisoned Pen. Remember, if you can’t make it to the event you can still order a signed copy via our website. You can pick it up in the store or have us ship it to you.
