James Sallis, whose book “Drive” was acclaimed as one of the best books of 2005, has now written a sequel called “Driven”. Following the phenomenal success of last years movie version of “Drive”, it is not surprising that Sallis would return to the story of the driver. It is now 7 years after the action of the first book. Driver now goes by the name of Paul West and is living in Phoenix. He has a thriving business and is engaged to a woman named Elsa. Feeling relatively safe after his mob trouble, Driver finds that his past will not fade away. Attacked by two men, he loses Elsa and his new life. Forced back underground, he calls on his friend Felix for help. Felix, along with others aid Driver in fending off those coming after him. The story shifts into overdrive and never lets up.
As with other Sallis novels, this one is taut, gritty, and unrelenting. Sallis exploits Phoenix like Chandler did with Los Angeles and Elmore Leonard did with Detroit. Do not miss this beautifully realized novel. It is every bit as riveting as “Drive”.
James Sallis will be at the Poisoned Pen on April 3rd. He will be joined by local writer’s Brent Ghelfi, Keith Rawson, and Patrick Millikin for an interview and discussion. This should be quite an event. The Valley of the Sun continues to be a mecca for crime writing so come and support our local talent.
STEVE SHADOW SCHWARTZ
For another novel set in Phoenix, which is as exciting as it is heart-breaking, read “When it all Comes Down to Dust” by Barry Graham.
